Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech – Tizi n’Tichka Pass – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Gorges

Cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass

Begin your desert journey early in the morning as you leave Marrakech and drive through the breathtaking High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. At 2,260 meters above sea level, this scenic mountain road offers stunning panoramas, Berber villages built from clay and stone, and a glimpse into rural Moroccan life.

Visit the Iconic Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah

Stop at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Ben Haddou, a well-preserved ksar (fortified village) built from red earth. Its ancient architecture and unique atmosphere have made it a favorite backdrop for movies like Gladiator, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones. Wander its alleys and climb to the summit for sweeping views of the surrounding desert terrain.

Explore Ouarzazate: Morocco’s Film Capital

Continue to Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Africa.” Here you can visit the famous Atlas Studios, where many international films were shot, and explore the historic Taourirt Kasbah, a former residence of the powerful Glaoui family.

Drive Through the Valley of Roses and Dades Gorges

After lunch, drive through the Valley of Roses and the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, passing through fragrant rose plantations and traditional mud-brick villages. Arrive at the dramatic Dades Gorges, a canyon carved by the Dades River. Spend the night in a charming guesthouse or riad, enjoying a traditional Moroccan dinner with views of the red rock formations.

Day 2: Dades Gorges – Todra Gorges – Erfoud – Merzouga – Erg Chebbi

Marvel at the Towering Todra Gorges

After breakfast, continue to the Todra Gorges, one of Morocco’s most spectacular natural wonders. These vertical limestone cliffs rise up to 300 meters, creating a narrow canyon perfect for walking and photography. The river that flows through it brings life to the surrounding palm groves and Berber communities.

Journey to the Sahara via Erfoud and Rissani

Drive through the desert towns of Tinjdad, Erfoud, and Rissani, the gateway to the Sahara. Erfoud is famous for its fossil workshops where ancient marine fossils are transformed into beautiful decorative pieces. In Rissani, visit a traditional souk, rich in spices, crafts, and history, once a major stop for trans-Saharan caravans.

Camel Trek to the Heart of the Erg Chebbi Dunes

Arrive at Merzouga, where your camel caravan awaits. Embark on a sunset camel trek across the stunning Erg Chebbi dunes, whose golden waves stretch endlessly into the horizon. After about an hour of riding, you’ll reach your desert camp nestled deep in the dunes.

Spend the Night Under the Stars

Experience an evening of Berber hospitality at a luxury desert camp or a traditional nomadic tent. Savor a delicious Moroccan dinner, enjoy local music around a campfire, and marvel at the incredible night sky, untouched by light pollution. This is one of the most magical highlights of the entire journey.

Day 3: Merzouga – Alnif – Anti-Atlas Mountains – Draa Valley – Ouarzazate – Marrakech

Witness a Sahara Sunrise and Return by Camel or 4×4

Wake before dawn to witness a breathtaking sunrise over the dunes, painting the desert in hues of gold and orange. After breakfast, return to Merzouga by camel or 4×4 and begin the return journey to Marrakech.

Drive Through Alnif and the Anti-Atlas Mountains

Take a different route through Alnif and the Anti-Atlas Mountains, known for their lunar landscapes and isolated Berber villages. This scenic route showcases the stark, rugged beauty of Morocco’s southern terrain.

Admire the Lush Draa Valley

Travel through the verdant Draa Valley, Morocco’s longest river valley lined with millions of date palms, ancient kasbahs, and small villages. This oasis region is a vital lifeline in the arid southeast and a beautiful contrast to the desert and mountain scenery.
